How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My Artist

(Other country magazines)

My artist is meant to portray a more secluded and miss understood aspect of the society. Whilst the country genre is usually thought of as a more innocent genre, with artists who are meant to be withdrawn and private, only portraying their feelings through their music, I have chosen to present my artist as more passionate and open about her past life.

My artist is meant to show a more rough background and have a slight edge of rebellion to her whilst still appearing innocent and ‘normal’ through her image, style and the way she presents herself. She is not meant to fit into her allocated ‘group’ and is meant to have a different type of attitude to that of the same social group, but her music is meant to help her audience relate to her instead of her history.

I feel I have presented this slight edginess through the speech in her interview on the feature page but have captured the innocence and country aspect of her character through the pictures I have used on the front cover, contents page and feature page. The pull quotes I have used throughout my project also helps show this more innocent yet rustic side of my artist.
Most country music magazine also choose to display their artists as a more innocent type of person but then use their articles to display them in a more revealing light, often talking about past drug or sex addictions and their ‘teenage antics’. It is because of this that I feel that my chosen artist fits in with other, real, country artists.

(Females)

I feel that my artist fits into the target audience of younger females, her young life experiences help her relate to young females who have come from bigger families (which is often common in more rural families). I also feel that my artists body image also helps her to fit in with my chosen target audience as she has an hour glass figure so therefor does not give off the expectation to be skinny but instead comes across as a real life example of how woman look instead of a projected airbrushed fantasy or expectation of a woman.

My Magazine overall

(Other country magazines)

I think that my magazine is slightly different to the typical country music magazine; this is because it has a slightly different look overall and gives of a more retro than country look. However my choice of images and artist names helps to bring it back to a more country genre, with the actual artists not being too made up.

A typical country magazine uses more neutral colours in their magazines and often has a darker background or more stereotypical pictures throughout the magazines, choosing to go for a more basic look; unlike some more pop magazines which choose to go for a more stylistic image in their magazines. I feel that my magazine has a mixed a bit of both to help it appeal to a slightly wider audience, bringing it slightly out of the country genre.

By making a more stylised magazine, like this one of taylor swift, you are able to attract a wider audience but also focus your magazine more on the artist, making it more apealing.
